Bonjour! I thought, for it being my first blog, it would be nice to do a whole recap of my very first trend analysis from high school: D.O.P Chic. Let’s get dive in! →

D.O.P (D-ah- p) Chic, also known as the dress over pants trend, is something that continues to pop up now and then, yet hasn't really been the top trend since its debut on mainstream red carpets in the early 2000s. Then again, the most common being boho dresses over jeans. Now, in the 2020s, the trend pops casually on runways like Acne Studios, Celine, and more, yet no one has permanently made the trend a staple, until recently, of course.

Now the 2.0 version of dresses over pants, or what I like to call D.O.P Chic, has been seen in a refreshing light through cape tops and button-down dresses, but the most noticeable combo has been a lace top with jeans. This style has been seen with boxy shapes, lace tops, asymmetrical lace dresses with jeans, and even paired with wide and cigarette cut jeans. This undeniable combo has for sure topped the icing on the cake in terms of refreshing and chic look in style. Paired with a mule heel, to a kitten, to a ballerina flat, and a nice pair of shades and a clutch, this look completes a versatile and effortless look.

Predictions/ Thoughts

LOWER WAIST PANTS

Brands like Valentino and YSL have brought back 70s/80s fashion with designs featuring big shoulder pads and plunging V-neck, and lower waistlines drawing more towards the hips and long torso

MORE SHEER & TULLE FABRIC

I like to imagine that as more designers use lace, tulle, and fabrics that resemble or flow, they will start bringing that back in a form of this trend. A perfect example would be Look 29 in the Y/Project SS 24 show. The model is seen wearing a wide tube top dress that has a high slit on the side, making it accessible for the model to fit her hand in her pocket, paired with almost stone-washed pink denim jeans. Now, while the jean has its own effect on the look, the top or dress flows well, looking settled yet dramatic. I believe something like this could be seen in Valentino, especially since their recent show, Inference Michele created looks that had a lot of flowy fabrics with lots of bling and layering. It would’ve been nice to possibly see a look like Y/Project transformed into something that captures the essence of glamor while still being chic. In addition, looks like Russian brand USHATAVA created a look using the trend but added a twist that I would also like to see in more of YSL. This look consisted of a classic slick bootleg jean with a long tube dress top that tied around the ankle. This look I could definitely see in shows like YSL with a long blazer/trench coat, even ALALÏA due to its simplicity yet niche design. — Okay, got carried away there. I’m no creative director, but overall, I would love to see more of this trend being flipped in these ways that are rather simple-looking but still impressive through design and composition.

FABRICS

Since we’re starting to fade away (a little) from the clean aesthetic, it would be nice to try that with fabric choices as well. I think more tulle, knit, sequin, and ruffle looks in tops could elevate and bring more of a bold and artsy look to the style, or like YSL's recent show, using more imitation of lace, like tulle, and fur-like fabrics would really create an interesting feel, or even the opposites and having bolder pants and simpler dress tops would be cool to see. One of my favorite pants is these dark wild leg pants that have matching fringe sticking out. A pant like that with a nice long asymmetrical lace dress would pair nicely with a YSL patent leather sling back pump.  (Image Below)

This look is a Marques ’Almeida Feather trimmed distressed jean, paired with ZARA lace top and a YSL leather slingback pump and a colorful stripped clutch.

And there you have it, folks. My thoughts and hopefully a thorough trend analysis on D.O.P Chic, which is a term used not only to simplify the name but also to describe how simply elevated the trend is. It’s a pretty easy-to-apply trend yet is versatile and can be styled and refined in many ways, both elevated, bold, sophisticated, and unique ways; it just depends on which one YOU enjoy.

Below I’ve created a shared Pinterest Board surrounding the trend. Enjoy. <3
